In December 2006, a new concept in music was premiered before an audience at the Stevens Institute of Technology. Under the direction of famed David Bowie guitarist Carlos Alomar, a unique and newly formed student ensemble, known as the MiniMidiMagicOrchestra, made its debut. Composed of seven student guitarists, which includes myself, the MMMO uses the latest technology of iGuitars synched with Roland MIDI and sampling devices to authentically reproduce sounds of other instruments.

what the instrument could do, because you are no longer limited to just the guitar.” The MMMO demonstrated this versatility by performing the jazz classic “Killer Joe,” “Hallucination,” a piece composed by Carlos Alomar, and along with the Stevens Choir, an excerpt from Mozart’s Requiem Mass in D Minor. While showcasing their talent, the MMMO took the audience through an incredible sonic journey. These pieces also showed what an amazing result music, technology and education could produce. |
MMMO guitarist Brian Plunkett stated “studying with Carlos has been really one of the greatest things that could ever happen to me. The other students and myself get along with him so well and that’s one of the most enriching parts of each lesson.” When asked what the most worthwhile aspect of working with the students was, Carlos Alomar responded “encouraging students to have such enthusiasm over their studies that nothing will stop them was most rewarding.” |
